HENSE The Name…
Posted: January 23, 2012 Filed under: Interviews | Tags: Arizona Ave., Art, Atlanta, Georgia, Hense, MSK, Mural, Paint, Sam Flax Leave a commentHENSE is one of Atlanta’s premier artists. His versatile style has grown since his graffiti days, He’s gone from tagging in train yards to hanging in galleries and now completing The Arizona Avenue mural commissioned by the Office of Cultural Affairs in Atlanta. We where lucky enough to meet up with him while painting the Arizona Wall this is what we saw… Later we did a follow up and asked him a few questions.
How long have you been painting?
I’ve been drawing since I was very young. I started doing graffiti in 1993 when I was 14 or 15. So I’ve been involved with the movement for almost 20 years now.I was interested in art and art history before I discovered graffiti, which has brought me almost full circle as some of my current inspiration comes from works created before I was born.
What inspires you?
Any strong mark weather it be man made or naturally created. Layers, materials, stains, color, line, surface, accidents. I enjoy simplicity and I enjoy chaos. Sometimes simplicity works and sometimes chaos works. The best is when they are working together.
I really enjoy the Faber Castell Watercolor Pencils, Krink Markers and theSpeedball Acrylic Ink. I frequently use Golden Acrylic products and materials as well. Any graphite stick or pencil and any form of Montana aerosol are also preferred materials.
I’m working on some large interior murals that will be installed in a space in June, so I’m trying to work on a similar scale that I’ve worked with on recent murals.
I’m going to be in the studio this winter working on a series of works on paper as well as large installations and paintings. I’m really wanting to focus on scale with my work aswell as continue to develop my exterior works.
Any new shows coming up we can tell people about?
There are a few projects in the works. I’m working on some installations for a show at MODA(Museum of Design Atlanta) June, 2012. I’m also working on an upcoming mural project for the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art this spring as well as planning a solo show in Atlanta for sometime in 2012.
I’m 90% complete with the walls. I’ve got a few more things to add and then we should be totally finished. I looking to have that completed by the first week in January.
